Milestones

Interfaith unions solemnized between April to August 2012 are featured in this issue. Names of those cremated during the same period also find mention herein. Other regular milestones data is for the period of August 16-31.

Names of contracting parties of intercommunity marriages are culled from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) in the Fort area and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names of intermarried Parsis that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

The interfaith marriages at the OCH numbered 10 and at MHADA numbered seven. Two Parsi couples opted for civil marriage (registered at OCH only).

A gleaning of the Chandan­wadi crematorium registers revealed the names of 10 Zoroastrians opting for cremation over dakhmenashini for the four month period.

Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of August. Intimation of only one birth was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data! Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 27. Eight Zoroastrians were victims of heart disease, three of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Liver disease, lung disease/pneumonia and cancer took the lives of three Zoroastrians each, while two patients each succumbed to anemia and Parkinson’s disease. One each fell prey to septicemia, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), kidney failure, hypertension and urosepsis. The viscera of one victim was reserved for chemical analysis and histopathological examination. The eldest to breathe her last was a female one short of her centenary. The youngest was a 50-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for Au­gust 16-31 in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
