Milestones
Babies born, marriages solem-nized and deaths that primarily occurred between the 1st and 15th of May 2012 have been mentioned herewith. Interfaith marriages taken place between January to April this year as well as names of Zoroastrians who have opted for cremation as their last funerary rites have also been published in this issue.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Interfaith unions numbered 19 at MHADA, whereas the civil marriages count was two. Registers at the OCH revealed 15 Zoroastrians who had opted for life partners out of the community and four civil marriages.
Ten Zoroastrians did not wish to be consigned to the Doongerwadi and opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the four month period.
Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who got married during this period. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (four) and death (19) figures for the first 15 days of May 2012. The highest number of deaths — 11— were due to diseases of the heart. Four of them were in the over 80 age category. Cancer, pneumonia/lung disease and old age/general debility took the lives of two patients each. One each died due to kidney failure, septicemia, brain disease, fever and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). The youngest and eldest to breathe their last were both males at 60 and 94 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of May in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this require-ment and cooperate with us.
