Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of August 2012.

An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (three) and death (31) figures for the first 15 days of August. Ten patients succumbed to diseases of the heart (of whom four were 80 years and over). The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease (five), old age/general debility and septicemia (three each) and liver disease, multi organ failure, cancer and diabetes (two each). Isolated causes of deaths numbered four. They were: gastritis, brain disease, Parkinson’s disease and intestinal obstruction. The eldest to die was a 97-year-old female, the youngest: a 58-year-old man. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of Au­gust in Bom­bay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
