Business and bonhomie

By Sherene Vakil · August 7, 2012

Within eight months of the election of the new committee that has spearheaded the recent activities of the Borivli and Suburban Zoroastrian Association (BASZA), an annual general meeting (AGM) was held on June 2, 2012 at which Tehmurash (Tehmul) Patel was co-opted to strengthen the management team. Secretary Khurshed Pastakia, who sent the report to Parsiana, stated that Patel has been a quiet worker, helping out without holding any post, and it was fitting, if overdue, to induct him into the team.
The annual Dae mah nu jashan that preceded the AGM was led by BASZA committee member Ervad Minoo Kotwal, after which the 40 plus gathering joined the priest in a humbandagi. The business part of the AGM, conducted by BASZA chairman Minoo Khan, saw easy passage of accounts, secretary’s report and re-appointment of honorary auditors. Before joint secretary Jimmy Adajania gave the vote of thanks, senior committee member Yazdi Motiwala announced that the talented vice president of BASZA Marzban Mehta and member Freny Bhagat had acted as husband and wife in the film Ferrari ki Sawaari and urged all to see the movie. A member of the audience asked Mehta whether he would be providing complimentary tickets, to which he reposted that even he and his real life wife Banoo had to buy tickets for the opening show!

Suggestions were sought and it was mooted that instead of spending money on courier charges, the BASZA Newsletter could be sent by e-mail; but with the elderly members expressing "horror” at the suggestion, the idea was dropped. Motiwala urged members to send the mark sheets of their children to the secretary so that at the next BASZA function scholarships and awards may be given to high performing students, the write-up mentions.
The fun part of the evening included rounds of housie at which Mahrukh Laher seemed to be wearing a lucky charm, the singing of popular song Kolaveri Di, and a dinner washed down with fizzy drinks. The evening wrapped up with laughter, bonhomie and the singing of Chhaiyé Hamé Zarthoshti.
