Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of July 2010.

Data on only two births in Bombay for the 15-day period was received by Parsiana while 35 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun-chayet). The major killer of the community — heart disease — took the lives of 11 Zoroastrians. Six of them were in the 80 and above age category. The other killers were: old age/general debility and cancer (four each), pneumonia/lung disease and Parkinson’s disease (three each) and sepsis (two). Isolated cases being arteriosclerosis (degenerative arterial change associated with advancing age), septicemia and hypertension. The youngest to perish was a 32-year-old male who was an unfortunate victim of a road traffic accident. The highest age at death was 97. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of July, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
