Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between the 15th to 31st of December 2008 have been mentioned herewith.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between ­23 and 31 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 45 years, averaging at 32 years.

The last fortnight of 2008 saw the birth of only three Zoroastrian babies — as per the data that Parsiana receives from two south Bombay hospitals. Deaths on the other hand numbered 38. Thirteen Zoroastrians succumbed to heart disease. Eight of those were in the 80+ age group. The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease which felled five patients, cancer and septicemia took a toll of three lives each and two victims each fell prey to kidney failure, liver disease and hypertension. There were eight isolated cases registered: diabetes, old age/general debility, malarial fever, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, fracture, hypothyroidism, multi organ failure and head injury. A 101-year-old male was the oldest to breathe his last; the youngest: a 60-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the latter half of December, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
