Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths that have taken place primarily in the first half of November 2008 are carried in this issue.
The age of all the Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) was 25 years, and therefore the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — was also 25 years. The age of the grooms ranged between 24 and 29 years, averaging at 27 years.
Twenty-five Zoroastrian bodies were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence (as per the death details that the Bombay Parsi Punchayet sends to Parsiana). There were seven babies born (as per the data from two south Bombay hospitals) in the 15 day period. This time the major killers were two diseases — of the brain and lungs, both claiming five Zoroastrians each. Two of the four victims to die due to heart related diseases were in the 80+ age category. Cancer claimed three patients whereas hypertension took a toll of two lives. The six isolated cases registered for the 15 days were septicemia, old age/general debility, Alzheimer’s disease, head injury, multi organ failure and septic shock. Fifty-six was the youngest age at death, the eldest age being 99 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of November, in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
