Award for Dr Kharas
Dr Percy B. Kharas, the infertility specialist and gynecologist who runs his independent, modern and well-equipped fertility clinic and hospital in Valsad, South Gujarat, was awarded the prestigious Bharat Jyoti at a function in New Delhi on March 28, 2008, as per a press release forwarded to Parsiana. The award was presented by Bhisma Narayan Singh who has been governor of Tamil Nadu, Assam and seven other states. Former central cabinet minister Mohammad Shafi Qureshi and chief election commissioner G. V. G. Krishnamurty endowed Kharas with a scroll at the glittering function which was attended by many government dignitaries and members of national and international non-governmental organizations.

The press release notes that earlier recipients of the award include Mother Teresa, Dr J. J. Irani of Tata Steel, architect Feroz Kudianawala, cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Chief Justice P. N. Bhagwati, cardiologist Dr B. K. Goyal, Dr Naresh Trehan, hockey wizard Dhanraj Pillai, industrialists Vijay Mallya and H. S. Singhania. Kharas received the award for the excellent results he has achieved in the field of infertility. Childless couples not merely in Gujarat but from all over India and even foreign countries have benefited from treatment received at the Kharas Hospital and Maternity Home, the press release concludes.
