Award for acupuncturist
The Priyadarshini Global Award 2008, conferred on Dr Rumi Beramji for "outstanding contribution to medical services” was received by him at the hands of Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on September 19, 2008. Beramji started practice as an allopath in 1977 along with his doctor wife Yasmin, as per a write-up received by Parsiana. The couple ran a general nursing home in Girgaum, Bombay. Soon, Beramji began to take an interest in acupuncture, did research in the field and, because of its "wonderful results,” decided to switch over to the alternate system in 1985.
Giving up the security of a thriving practice, the Beramjis "set sail on the unchartered sea of acupuncture.” Their nursing home now provides acupuncture and allied therapies like physio-therapy, Kerala massage and exercises based on yoga, Yasmin informed Parsiana. Beramji has devoted his life to the study and treatment of orthopedic cases like slip disc, spondylosis, arthritis and frozen shoulder, receiving recognition worldwide for providing relief to sufferers without using drugs or surgery. Beramji’s services are sought by patients from all over India and abroad, claims the write-up.
Beramji has received many awards including the Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award 2004, Dharti Ratna 2006 — gold medal in recognition of services rendered to inhabitants of Mother Earth and the Indira Gandhi Sadbhavna Award in September 2008, mentions the write-up.
