Making a strong though somewhat belated entry into the direct-to-home (DTH) television market is Tata Sky, an 80:20 joint venture between Tata and STAR. With Zee’s Dish TV having a headstart in DTH satellite space with a reported subscriber base of around one-and-a-half million, Tata Sky’s introductory offer seeks to draw customers into its orb.“It is a big investment game and only those with deep pockets can survive,” Tata Sky CEO Vikram Kaushik told the media.
On September 8, 2006 Tata Sky launched Showcase, its dedicated pay-per-view movie service which offers the most recent Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters to viewers in the comfort of their homes, at convenient times and without the irritation of ad breaks. Orders can be placed by calling the Tata Sky Helpline up to five minutes prior to the start of the film.
