‘Chikkotee’ culled from?
When I was a boarder in Parsi High School (the name later changed to Bilimoria High School) Panchgani, a barber, fondly called ‘Navi’ used to come to the school, every Wednesday, to cut the hair of the students, in rotation. No student could escape his nimble scissor. For his labor, he was being paid a princely amount of four annas (twenty five paise).
Whenever a boarder had his hair cut, other students would hand slap that boy at the back of his neck and like warriors after victory, yell "Chikkotee.”
Till today, I do not know the origin of the world "Chikkotee,” its meaning and especially its association with a haircut. Could any Parsiana reader enlighten me?
