Milestones

Compared to four births reportedly known to Parsiana there were 38 deaths between September 1 and 15, 2005. The killers were: heart disease (12, of whom one was a nonagenarian), pneumonia/lung disease (seven), cancer (five), brain disease (four) and kidney failure and hypertension (two each). The eight isolated cases were: asthma, septicemia, diabetes, nervous disorder, gas-tro-intestinal bleeding, old age/general debility, Par-kinson’s disease and myelitis (inflammation of the spinal cord). The age range fluctuated between 42 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of September, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in su-burban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
