This issue’s Milestones publishes intercommunity marriage data for the four month period of May-August 2005. One Arya Samaj marriage has also been included. Births, marriages and deaths that have occured between August 16-31 have also been printed herewith.

The names of the contracting parties of interfaith marriages have been culled from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) and the MHADA office. However, names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

Thirteen intercommunity marriages plus two civil were registered at the OCH, whereas the MHADA office registers showed 16 and two respectively.

Six Zoroastrians preferred to be cremated rather than be consigned to Bombay’s Tower of Silence between May-August, as per the Chandanwadi records.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 31 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 34 and 35 years, averaging at 34 years.

There was only one reported birth as compared to 40 deaths. The killers were: heart disease (11 — five, 80 years and above); cancer (six); pneumonia/lung related diseases (five); septicemia (four), old age/general debility (three) and kidney failure, hypertension, brain disease, diabetes and sepsis (two each). My-asthenia gravis was the only isolated case reported. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the latter half of August, in Bombay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

If readers have any births/marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
