Milestones
Seventeen babies were born in the Zoroastrian community in the month of September 2004. In comparison were 61 deaths. The killer diseases were those of the heart [18 — 10 (80+) and eight], pneumonia/lung disease (11), cancer (six), septicemia (four), diabetes and old age/general debility (three each) and kidney failure, hypertension and brain disease (two each). The 10 isolated deaths were: Parkinson’s disease, sepsis, liver disease, malnutrition, urinary infection, hyperkalemia (excessive potassium in the blood), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), Alzhei-mer’s disease, polymyositis (inflammation of many muscles) and empyema (collection of pus in a cavity, hollow organ or space). The age range fluctuated between 47 and 96 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for September, in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
