Milestones

Published herein are intercommunity marriages for the months of May to August 2004. They have been sourced from the Old Customs House, Fort and at the MHADA office in East Bandra. However names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

The MHADA office listed four such marriages and 11 were registered at the Old Customs House. There were no civil marriages contracted during this period.

As per the cremation data available to us only from the Chandanwadi crematorium, seven Zoroastrian bodies were cremated there during the four months.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 20 and 31 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 25 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 32 years, averaging at 30 years.

Births and deaths in the community were five and 73 respectively in the month of July. From among the 31 patients who succumed to heart disease, 20 were above 80 years of age. Next among the killers was cancer claiming 13 lives. Pneumonia/lung disease felled nine victims whereas diabetes and brain disease took a toll of three each. Two Zoroastrians each fell prey to kidney failure, hypertension and general debility/old age. Isolated causes of deaths were hypothyroidism, road accident, liver disease, haematoma, uremia, pancreatitis, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body) and fever. The age range fluctuated between 53 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for July, in Bombay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
