Milestones

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 45 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 45 years, averaging at 32 years.

Eighty Zoroastrians were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence in March 2004. That month also saw the births of 10 Zoroastrian babies at two south Bombay hospitals. Twenty of the 33 patients who succumbed to heart disease were octogenarians and above. Fourteen deaths were attributed to various diseases of the lungs/pneumonia. Cancer was the cause of seven deaths while brain disease and septicemia claimed four victims each. Asthma and multi organ failure felled three lives each and liver disease, two. Isolated cases were hemiplegia, dehydration, intestinal obstruction, general debility, anemia, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, shock following polytrauma and gastro-intestinal bleed. A stillborn baby, a two-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were also lost to the community. Ninety-five was the highest age at death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for March, in Bombay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
