Industrialist and philanthropist founder of Serum Institute of India Dr Cyrus Poonawalla and his family are now the third richest
Indians, noted the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List for 2022 that was published in the week of September 19, 2022. Based on estimates till August 31, The Economic Times (ET) noted that the Poonawallas moved up three places after their wealth increased by 25% over the last year to Rs 2,05,400 crores. Gautam Adani and family, whose wealth "more than doubled” heads the list with Rs 10,94,400 crores, marking a change of 116% over the previous year. Mukesh Ambani and family dropped to second place at Rs 7,94,700 crores.
Others on the list are Shiv Nadar, Radhakrishnan Damani, Vinod Adani, S. P. Hinduja, L. N. Mittal, Dilip Shanghvi and Uday Kotak. Founder of Nykaa beauty platform Falguni Nayar has overtaken industrialist Kiran Mazumdar Shaw to "become the richest self-made woman.” The entry of 19-year-old Kaivalya Vohra, founder of speedy grocery delivery platform Zepto, marked the first ever teenager to get on the list. The youngest 10 years ago was 37, noted the website of Hurun India. "A record 735 entrepreneurs or 67% are self-made, up from 54% five years ago,” noted the website. Hurun India noted that Ratan Tata is the "most followed entrepreneur from the list with 118 lakh followers on Twitter.
The ET report stated that India had 221 billionaires this year as compared to 237 of the previous year. Individuals with over Rs 1,000 crores numbered 1,103; their cumulative wealth rose to Rs 100 lakh crores, more than the combined Gross Domestic Products of Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Bombay topped the rich list with 283 individuals, followed by Delhi (185) and Bangalore (85).
The 2022 report is the 11th consecutive edition of the rich list.
