WZO’s Covid relief
The second Covid wave that began in mid-March 2021 has severely impacted members of the community. Recognizing this, The World Zoroastrian Organisation (WZO) Trust Funds and The World Zoroastrian Organisation Trust have raised funds and provided relief to 477 individuals amounting to nearly one-and-a-half crore rupees in April and June this year.
Due to loss of income caused by the closure of places of worship, 114 mobeds were given Rs 28,50,000. Fifty-three self-employed persons, similarly afflicted, received Rs 10,95,000. A total of 184 salaried individuals who received reduced salaries or no salaries, were helped to the tune of Rs 33,35,000. Nineteen farmers who suffered losses in income from agricultural, dairy or poultry farming received Rs 4,25,000. Rs 64,79,116 was spent on 75 persons to cover the costs of hospitalization and medical treatment for Covid, while another Rs 6,35,000 was given to 32 persons for miscellaneous reasons.
This relief was possible entirely due to generous donations received from the Zoroastrian Charity Funds of Hong Kong, Canton and Macao, Pervin and Jal Shroff of Hong Kong, the Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America (FEZANA) and the Bai Maneckbai P. B. Jeejeebhoy Deed of Settlement Fund, Bombay.
Relief and rehabilitation provided by the WZO Trusts team is an ongoing process and expected to continue over the next few months. DINSHAW K. TAMBOLY
