Masina’s Covid response

By Farrokh Jijina · December 7-December 20, 2020
Nine independent cubicles within a prefabricated transportable unit will provide emergency treatment for Covid-19 patients who have a heart condition, noted Masina Hospital’s chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Vispi Jokhi, in conversation with Parsiana on November 21, 2020. Inaugurated on November 3 by the chairman of the Bombay Municipal Corporation standing committee Yashwant Jadhav, the advanced cardiac care unit (ACCU) will also provide comfort to "non-Covid heart patients who are rather unwilling to visit a hospital due to fear of infection,” Jokhi noted. The ACCU is installed in an independent space within the eight-acre Hospital complex. An advanced and independent heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and self-disinfecting washroom facility prevents the possibility of infection to the cardiac patients. Equipped with high-end medical gas compressors, vacuum pumps, ventilators, defibrillator, nursing station and storage area, the ACCU "provides all the facilities present in a regular intensive care unit,” stated a press release from the Hospital. "Even a Covid positive patient with an acute heart attack can be given emergency treatment in this Unit,” noted Dr Zainulabedin Hamdulay, cardiothoracic surgeon and chairman of Masina Heart Institute.

"The presence of this advanced ACCU and the availability of a cardiac ambulance service from the Hospital will ensure that parties from the Parsi community in the neighborhood” would benefit from this facility, stated Jokhi.
Also present at the inauguration were legislative assembly member Yamini Jadhav and corporator Sonam Jamsutkar. Masina Hospital trustees Homi Katgara and Jimmy Parakh were present too, Jokhi informed Parsiana.
The press release from the Hospital, quoting joint CEO Behram Khodaiji, stated the Hospital has recently acquired "pre-accreditation” from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), the principal body that provides accreditation for hospitals in the country.
