President’s Police Medal

Police Inspector Cyrus Irani’s (pictured) great day of glory came on January 26, 2018 when the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service was conferred on him by the Government of India.
He was inducted in the Maharashtra State Police Service as a direct nominee for the post of Police sub inspector in the year 1993. Whilst training at the Maharashtra Police Academy, Nasik he was sent to Killari village (district Latur) following a massive earthquake there and later to Hingoli district, on bandobast duty to handle the agitation against the change in the name of Marathwada University. He successfully and tactfully handled both the situations ensuring that no untoward incident occurred. On completion of training, he was posted at Sir J. J. Marg Police Station which was newly formed after the 1993 communal riots and was known to be a communally sensitive area.
Among the various notable tasks performed by Irani, special mention must be made of two: his arrest of the notorious absconder Umar Haji Khalil Sheikh who had created terror in the area and was wanted by the V. P. Road Police station; and controlling the tense situation in the communally sensitive area of Null Bazar and bridging the gap between the communities via "Mohalla Ekta Committee” that brought members on one platform.
When posted to the Traffic Control Branch, Planning Cell in July 1998 he did notable work. As the nodal officer he interacted with other state agencies for the construction work of 38 flyovers and three pedestrian subways in the city. His meticulous planning and zealous work considerably eased traffic movements in the city. He has also been given credit for creating 245 taxi stands in the city for commuter convenience.
On December 20, 1999 the Director General of Police specially appointed him pilot officer when a special convoy of 36 motor vehicles brought the sacred fire from Tavdi to Bombay before it was enthroned at the Shapoorji Fakirji Jokhi Agiary at Godrej Baug. He was also instrumental in successfully arranging the traffic diversion plans when for the first time in the history of South Bombay an air show was held by the Indian Air Force at Marine Drive; the Maharashtra Cabinet was sworn in at Azad Maidan; and the Standard Chartered Marathon was organized.
Two honors were conferred on him in 2007: he was awarded the Director General of Police Insignia for outstanding work and was given advance increment in his salary, a rare recognition for a serving police officer.
In view of his abilities, intelligence and good track record, Irani was posted to the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, Bombay from 2007 to 2013 when he submitted vital inputs to the government and was assigned various secret missions that earned him commendation certificates.
When posted with the Special Protection Unit of Bombay, he had to arrange for the security of VVIPs (very very important persons) and was the personal security officer to the Governor of Maharashtra. His next posting to Special Branch-II, Criminal Investigation Department, Bombay as in-charge of Mumbai Sea Port Immigration, saw him successfully prepare a standard operating procedure for all the seaports in India. He has also lectured police officers at training academies in Gujarat and Goa.
