“Desai’s dual deliveries”

Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) chairman Yazdi Desai’s total U-turn concerning Dinshaw Tamboly’s nomination to the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has made us a laughing stock, within and without our community.
Desai should have put on his thinking cap before asking Aspi Sarkari (the acting secretary of The Federation of the Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India) to write to the minister for minorities suggesting Tamboly’s name. Not only that, he should have consulted his board before putting ink to paper.
I agree entirely with Piroja Jokhi ("Desai’s dual deliveries,” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, May 21, 2017) that Tamboly’s reformist views do not qualify for his rejection. Zoroaster was a very big reformist of his day. Had the right-thinking Iranians rejected him, all of us would have been marauding tribesmen.
As a chief executive officer of the BPP for 10 years, I found that its board had two camps! But it was never as fractious as today. As a micro-minority we are sadly a house divided against ourselves.
Tamboly, Jamsheed Kanga, Homi Khusrokhan and the A. H. Wadia Trust deserve to be praised for creating the Prayer Hall at Worli.
