Milestones

In order to publish more current Milestones information Parsiana is carrying the names of the deceased from the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) website bpp-
paidust.in and of those cremated and/or whose funerary ceremonies are performed at the Worli Prayer Hall. The names of those cremated are sent to us by Prayer Hall coordinator Ervad Framroze Mirza, by e-mail.
The last few names of those deceased in the end of May 2017 find mention here as well as those who passed away till June 11.
In a birth-starved community the birth of 10 babies in May at one south Bombay hospital is much to cheer about. Zoroastrian bodied consigned to the Bombay’s Towers of Silence numbered 54. Ten of the 11 who succumbed to ailments of the heart were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Brain disease and cancer claimed eight lives each, whereas four patients each fell prey to septicemia and old age/general debility. Hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), kidney failure, pneumonia/lung disease, Parkinson’s disease and hypertention took the lives of two victims each. Diabetes, liver disease, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), arthritis, multi organ failure, urosepsis and thrombocytopenia (a reduction in the number of platelets in the blood) claimed isolated lives. One Zoroastrian male succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries and another died due to asphyxia from hanging himself. The youngest and eldest to perish were both males: at 42 years and another a centenarian. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for June 2017 in Bom­bay was 83 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased alongwith their ages, addresses and causes of deaths are forwarded to Parsiana by the BPP. The trust however notes that the information has not been verified or authenticated by them. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
