Milestones

By Roxan Driver · May 21, 2017

In order to publish more current Milestones information Parsiana is carrying the names of the deceased from the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) website bpp-
paidust.in and of those cremated and/or whose funerary ceremonies are performed at the Worli Prayer Hall. The names of those cremated are sent to us by Prayer Hall coordinator Ervad Framroze Mirza, by e-mail.
A few names of those deceased in April 2017 find mention here as well as those who passed away till May 17.
Interfaith marriages taken place between January to April 2017 have also been published in this issue.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort. Since the registration of marriages at Khar is in the process of being converted from manual to online, Parsiana could not access the names of Zoroastrians who tied the knot during that period over there. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Interfaith unions numbered 18 at the OCH. There was one civil marriage.
Since the opening of the Prayer Hall at Worli no Zoroastrian opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the four month period.
As versus seven babies being born, there were 54 deaths in April. The major killer — heart disease — took the lives of 20 Zoroastrians (15 were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Other deaths were attributed to lung disease/pneumonia (nine), brain disease (five), cancer (three) and old age/general debility, anemia, sepsis, kidney failure and mutli organ failure (two each). Septicemia, arteriosclerosis (degenerative arterial change associated with advancing age), asthma, haemoptysis (coughing up of blood), gangrene, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes felled one patient each. The community lost two centenarians [a female aged 103 (the eldest to die) and a 101-year-old male] and two youths, both males, at 32 (the youngest) and 35 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for April 2017 in Bombay was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased alongwith their ages, addresses and causes of deaths are forwarded to Parsiana by the BPP. The trust however notes that the information has not been verified or authenticated by them. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
