All was not well

By Sherene Vakil · December 21, 2016
On November 29, 2016 community activist Mehernosh Fitter sent a WhatsApp message to the effect that at 10.30 a.m. an unknown physically challenged non-Parsi man had jumped into the sacred Bhikha Behram Well at Fort. The Fire Brigade and Bombay Police reached the place within 15 minutes and rescued the man, though "his chappals are still in the well water,” wrote Fitter.

Policeman descending into the Bhikha Behram Well

According to the Hindustan Times (HT) of November 30, eye-witnesses said that the man, who seemed to be in his 20s, rushed into the compound and jumped in. Caretaker Nadir Tangri told HT, "He went under the water for some time, but then started swimming. When he was tired, he caught hold of the pipe (used to pump out water for the drinking fountain)… We asked him to come out,” but when he refused, a policeman went down with the help of a ladder and pulled him out. Tangri felt that the man was mentally disturbed.
Subsequently the well water was reportedly pumped out and the holy well of the Parsis cleaned with jaggery and lime.
