“Game of the name”

In the article "Game of the name” (Parsiana, March 7, 2016) on Parsi surnames and a need for compilation of the same, the writer, Thrity Dadabhoy mentions her inability to trace the origin of her maiden surname, Keeka. In my research, I have placed Keeka in the section "Characteristic Group,” with the origin "one like a small child” (in Gujarati Keeko or Keeka means small child).
I have compiled an exhaustive list of Parsi Irani surnames which is available online and can be viewed at http://parsisurnames.tripod.com Along with the alphabetical list I have also collated the names group-wise, along with the origins of surnames.
Some of the interesting ones are: Chichgar — maker of special wooden toys. Chich means wooden toy and gar is to make. Paajnigara: one who makes very fine silk cloth. Paaj means silk cloth and gara denotes maker thereof. Rao is a title meant for an honorable person, or perhaps a local king. Tata, a name inherited by Jamsetji, comes from his ancestor who was very hot tempered — like a Tartar. Dokawada was originally taken from Doka-Wadi-Wala and then shortened. It is taken from Doka-Wadi, a maidan where a fierce battle had taken place and so it was known as Doka (head) Wadi (place).
I am working on a book of names of Parsi Irani children, segregated according to the rashis (alphabet recommended to begin the newborn’s name with), which will soon be ready. BURJOR DABOO
