Sahitya Award for Mistry

Cyrus Mistry, author and playwright was among those who received the Sahitya Akademi Literary Award for 2015. The list of winners, including Hindi and Kannada poets, a Malayalam novelist and a Tamil essayist, was released by the Akademi on December 17, 2015. The awards were recommended by distinguished jury members who represented 23 Indian languages and were approved by the executive board. Comprising a casket containing a cheque for one lakh rupees, a shawl and an engraved copper plaque, the awards will be presented to the winners at a special event on February 16, 2016, during the Festival of Letters organized by the Akademi, notes a press release.

Several past winners including Keki Daruwalla (see "Poets’ dissent,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, November 7, 2015), had returned their awards last year in protest against the growing atmosphere of intolerance in the country and the inaction of the Akademi in this regard.
Mistry, aged 59, had won the $ 50,000 DSC Prize in 2014 for his novel Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer. His play Doongaji House had won the Sultan Padamsee Award when the writer was 21.
