Walk with the times
To my mind, the main quality of a Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) trustee should be to walk with the times and be tolerant about the feelings of others. Just seven men/women are chosen to chalk out the future of a community and, as we saw in the previous BPP board, their meddling in people’s personal choices was a bane for many.
There should be no deviating from criteria that have been chalked out. At all times trustees should speak in one voice, thrashing out their differences only in the boardroom.
They should be people of humility and courage to rectify old wrongs, with self-respect and dignity for themselves and for the board, transparency in all financial dealings, and lastly men of character and strength who can take the community forward, instead of dragging it into outdated un-functional rituals and rules.
The right of religious choice should not be meddled with. Not all good people make good leaders, and Indian politics has enough examples to prove this.
