Football is his forte

By Sherene Vakil · July 21, 2015
Yohan Confectioner of Calcutta who has been training with Mohammedan Sporting, one of India’s leading football clubs, has now gone to Madras for a few days to try out the Chennai Football Club. He also plans to go to Poona for trials with DKS Shivajians, a new club with a very modern and sophisticated set-up, mentions his father Cyrus in response to Parsiana’s queries. Earlier, Confectioner played for Calcutta Football Club, a second division club in a very competitive league, as revealed his mother Aban in another email, to which Cyrus adds: "It is one of the oldest football clubs in the world” and was a top first division club at one time.
In September 2014 the April 20, 1993 born footballer was selected, through a national talent hunt, to undergo a 10-day training stint at Club Boca juniors, an iconic club in Argentina.

Yohan, Aban, Cyrus and Kaizeen Confectioner

Yohan, who studied at the La Martiniere School and St Xavier’s College, both in Calcutta, comes from a sporting background. Aban played national level basketball and captained the West Bengal team on numerous occasions. Cyrus played football and hockey and currently is manager of the Football Players’ Association of India and hence in a position to gauge how his son’s career can be best advanced. Sister Kaizeen, two years younger, has represented West Bengal at the national basketball championships in the youth, junior and senior categories (see "Hooping it right,” Sports, Parsiana, August 7, 2011), captaining the squad in 2013.
Yohan writes a blog on football and has another one where he showcases his poetry. He believes Zoroastrianism is a philosophy of life. Though he feels lucky to have been born a Zoroastrian, he says there are some customs and traditions that require radical changes, such as discrimination against women who marry outside the fold and their children. He has attended two inter-city religious meets where young Zoroastrians from Delhi, Jamshedpur and Calcutta exchanged thoughts and ideas, his mother’s email notes.
