Rare Finds revisited
"Advertising was an exciting and liberating means of expression for many of the artists who created the artworks for advertisements. The kitsch, eclectic, artistic and unusual images often accompanied by humorous and interesting text are collectibles,” mentions the press release received from Rare Finds. For the first time, old advertisements were to feature in an exhibition curated by art historian Dilnavaz Mehta titled "Rare Finds — Hindoostan Revisited” mounted at the Cymroza Art Gallery from December 3-9, 2014. The newly introduced advertisements are pictorial images accompanied by text about the wares and services that companies offered. Also on view and offer are rare original collectable prints — lithographs, engravings, etchings, aquatints, illustrations, old maps and books from as far back as the 16th century.

Pictorial images of India which were published between 1660 and 1930 show landscapes, portraits, people in native attire, urban views, native life in India, flora and fauna. Produced in small numbers, these are limited edition art works. Old original maps, antiquarian and rare books are among the items that Mehta exhibits from time to time "in order to spread awareness about them and for them to be appreciated and viewed by a larger number of people.” These historical and cultural curiosities, which are appreciated and collected for their uniqueness and rarity, are also used as décor for homes and offices, Mehta maintains.
