Members of the jury
Five delegates have been selected as members of the jury for the final hearing of the Parsi Chief Matrimonial Court in Bombay, the last surviving vestige of this form of jurisprudence in the country. They are Zarin Havewala, Goolu Karani, Jamshed (Jimmy) Gadiwalla, Phiroze Sethna and Dr Jehangir Deboo. Three delegates from the earlier jury — Mithoo Wadia, Sam Patel and Adi Mogrelia — have been retained for final hearing of two old cases which are pending. The recently refurbished Central Court of the Bombay High Court was allotted for hearing cases relating to Parsi matrimonial matters.
On May 12, 2014 the Registrar, Parsi Chief Matrimonial Court sent intimations to the delegates to attend the court from July 30 to August 14, 2014 as members of the jury for deciding the fate of Parsi matrimonial suits. Of the 20 delegates, 13 reported to the court on July 30, 2014, of which the above mentioned five were nominated by Justice Gautam Patel.
As per a government notice dated February 2, 2013, the 20 delegates were appointed by the Government of Maharashtra to aid in the adjudication of cases arising under the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936. In addition to the eight mentioned above, the others are Errick Elavia, Arnavaz Mistry, Mithoo J. Jessia, Nozer R. Balsara, Phiroze Amroliwalla, Cmde (Retd) Medioma Bhada, Cyrus P. Dastoor, Cyrus Patel, Vistasp Vimadalal, Hutokshi H. Dadabhoy, Yazdi Talati and Kekobad Doongriwalla.
