Young entrant, old tradition

By Sherene Vakil · November 21, 2013
Reportedly the youngest person to be inducted into the Rotary Club of Bombay, Jamshyd Vazifdar had not yet completed 27 years of age when he became a member on July 6, 2013. That’s not the only reason why he created history. He represents the fourth generation of a family to have been members of the same Club, one of the 10 leading Rotary Clubs in the world, mentions Anmol Purohit, freelance journalist in a write-up sent to Parsiana.

The first family member to join the Club in 1950 was Dr Nowroji Vazifdar who represented the "Medicine: Forensics” classification until his demise in 1960. The patriarch was a captain in the medical service of the Army and was honored with the title of Khan Bahadur by the British. As a government pleader/prosecutor, the doctor was much in demand in the medico-legal cases of his times. Among the books he wrote was The Physiology of the Central Nervous System, mentions the article.
Dr Jamshed, Nowroji’s only son was educated in the USA and became a pioneer of blood transfusion in India. Having served as general secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society, Maharashtra for many decades, he received a Padma Shri for medicine. Joining the Rotary Club in 1968, under the classification "Red Cross,” Jamshed was honorary secretary for seven years before being elevated as president in 1980-81. He remained an active Rotarian until his death in 2000, the article notes.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Nowroze was admitted to the same Rotary Club in 1994 and held various positions there, culminating in presidentship in 2012-13. A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India with a Masters degree in Management Studies, he filled the classification of "Consultant: Board Practices and Corporate Laws.” Nowroze has been a member of the Government of India’s Advisory Committee on Company Law and of the Accounting Standards Board of ICAI.
The latest entrant Jamshyd’s classification is "Information Technology: Software Engineering.” The engineering graduate is associated with the international consulting, technology and software firm Accenture Services, working on a project for a US based client.
