“A good catch”

By Parinaz M. Gandhi · July 7, 2013
The marriage of two Australian Zoroastrians Rayomand Medhora and Binaifer Doodha in the gardens of the Australian Zoroastrian Association premises on May 4, 2013 generated not only excitement within the community but also media interest. As reported in The Sydney Morning Herald: "Ray Medhora would be a good catch in any community. He is 27, handsome, a former Sunday school teacher and a family counsellor. Medhora is also one of 2,541 Zoroastrians in Australia, slightly ahead of the Satanists with 2,454 followers, according to the latest census of religions conducted in 2011.” Twenty-five-year-old Binaifer was considered "an equally good catch,” being an early childhood teacher and working in her family child care business for the last seven years.
According to the news report when Rayomand announced that he was marrying Binaifer "his mother and aunt punched the air in celebration and let out whoops that stopped the busy yum cha service at the restaurant where the family was eating last Mother’s Day.” The families had known each other a long time and the couple had dated intermittently. "When they got back together, they dated secretly for several years, not wanting to get their families’ hopes up.”
Another report titled "The rare marriage of two Aussie Zoroastrians” appeared online in World News Australia. "Every year thousands of Australians tie the knot. But two newlyweds in Sydney are not only celebrating their new life together, they are also helping to save their religion from dying out…The marriage of two Zoroastrians is a rarity and cause for celebration within the community,” stated the write-up.
Although there were 250 guests who attended the celebrations, the wedding was witnessed by many more for the highlights of the festivities were accessible on YouTube. Some viewers congratulated the young couple and others like Farokh Mehrshahi from California commented, "Zoroastrianism is the way of life of free people; free to choose, free to live and believe.”
