Zoroastrian birth figures

By Sherene Vakil · April 21, 2013
The annual number of Parsi/Irani Zoroastrian births in Bombay continues to hover around 200 for the past six years. Figures provided by the Bombay Municipal Corporation and released by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) via BPP senior executive (welfare) Cawas Panthaki’s letter dated March 12, 2013 shows 201 births in 2012 of which 99 are male and 102 are female. In 2011 the number of males born was 108 versus 87 females.
The number of deaths in Bombay in 2012 was over 761. Thus the community numbers dwindled by around 560 last year.
While the figures may not provide much comfort to a community hurtling towards extinction, the improvement in the sex ratio is a welcome sign.
