By Parinaz M. Gandhi · February 21, 2013
Among those who feature in the Queen’s New Year Honours’ list for 2013 is London based Rustom Tata who was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO). Founded in April 1896 by Queen Victoria, the Royal Victorian Order is given by the Queen to people who have served her or the monarchy in a personal way, mentions the official website of the British monarchy.
A partner of DMH (former Donne Mileham & Haddock) Stallard, one of UK’s leading law firms, for the last 16 years Tata’s forte has been employment issues. The firm has 30 partners, 94 legal, planning and tax experts, and 280 staff members in their offices in Brighton, Crawley and London serving clients mainly throughout London and the South East, as also nationally and internationally. With Tata based in the firm’s growing London office he uses his considerable experience of advocacy in the Employment Tribunals to provide advice to clients on restructuring and post-merger integration projects.
"As an employment lawyer with over 20 years’ experience, my own current work is mostly for employers, such as professional service firms, independent schools and international charities,” explained Tata, adding, "I am fortunate in that most of my work is from personal recommendation, and the team’s strength reputation in other areas such as technology, private equity, and local government means that we work for a wide and varied list of clients, acting for both employers and employees.” As a member of DMH’s management team, he has additionally gained experience in some other areas like running a business.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Tata did his BA (Hons) with Law and French from the University of Sussex, and his Masters in Law from the University of London.
Apart from his responsibilities at DMH Stallard, he is a non executive director of the University of Sussex Students’ Union Services and a trustee of the Mandela Scholarship Fund. He also involves himself in community activities as when he participated in a career clinic organized by the World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce — UK chapter on "Recession-Proofing Your Career” at Café Spice Namaste in 2008. He was among the panelists invited to address 70 participants on "How can I protect my career?” His contribution was from the legal angle, advising participants on what they can and should expect. His leisure interests include cricket and badminton.
