Judicial appointee
Kevic Setalvad was appointed additional solicitor general (ASG) of the western zone in Maharashtra on July 4, 2012. Setalvad replaces Darius Khambata who was elevated to become Maharashtra’s advocate general. The post of ASG, which is an appointment from the Center, has been vacant since March 27, 2012.
Setalvad currently represents the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in the Adarsh Housing Society scam. The MoD has made an application to intervene. Setalvad contested the state government’s claim that the Adarsh land belonged to it and that the Central Bureau of Investigation cannot probe the scam. The Economic Times of July 9, 2012 reported that counsels for Adarsh Society and the state government had opposed the MoD lawyer’s plea to intervene in the matter, on the ground the Adarsh Inquiry Commission had already ruled that the land in question belonged to the state. After Setalvad’s convincing arguments, the Bombay High Court allowed the MoD access to all documents to enable it to file its reply.
Forty-eight-year-old Setalvad is an alumnus of Campion School, where he was the house captain, and of Government Law College, Bombay. He is known for his clear thinking, integrity and humility. The son of Anant and Jeroo (née Hilloo), Setalvad is married to a Zoroastrian.
