Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of June 2012.
Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of June. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 23. Diseases of the heart claimed five Zoroastrians; three of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Multi organ failure and brain disease took the lives of three patients each. Two victims each fell prey to septicemia, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by deficiency of thyroid secretion) and intestinal obstruction. Kidney failure, cancer, cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissue), diarrhoea, sepsis, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and lung disease/pneumonia took single lives. A 35-year-old lady was the youngest to breathe her last, the eldest, a 95-year-old man. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of June in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
