Federation in Poona

By Sherene Vakil · July 21, 2012
The next meeting of the executive council of the Federation of Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India (FPZAI) will be held in Poona on September 1 and 2, 2012. The meet was earlier scheduled for Delhi but the Delhi Parsi Anjuman declined to host the gathering as they had been denied the FPZAI vice presidency and also the additional seat on the executive council over two years ago. Surat reportedly was also willing to host the meet if Poona had declined.

Initially the meet was to be held in Jabalpur in November but as the FPZAI constitution requires the meet to be held every six months and Jabalpur was unable to comply, the venue was shifted. Jabalpur is also viewed as a World Alliance of Parsi Irani Zarthoshtis (WAPIZ) stronghold and hence FPZAI and Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) chairman Dinshaw Mehta apparently was unwilling to bend the rules to accommodate the Madhya Pradesh city.
The WAPIZ Page (WP) of June 29, 2012 in The Free Press Journal urged FPZAI leaders "to shed their political equations and machinations and personal egos and display statesmanship.” The WP mentioned that a special meeting of the office bearers and zonal vice presidents of the FPZAI was scheduled for Friday July 13 to discuss the action taken on defunct anjumans. Other BPP trustees are also expected to attend the meet.
