“Community cliques”

This refers to "Community cliques” (Parsiana, March 7, 2012) by Faribourz Nariman who deserves to be complimented for his outspokenness. There are a number of journalists and activists willing to dish out goody-goody stuff, their mantra being "unity.” But they forget that in our minuscule community there are three distinct sects — one which celebrates the new year in March, the second in July and the third in August.
There are differing views as to who is a "real Parsi.” Some say only a vegetarian and a teetotaler. Others say one who is broad-minded to welcome interfaith marriages. Yet others say we cannot convert people of other races. Some feel a willing convert is acceptable. Others say rituals are not prescribed by our religion. Some maintain no ritual, no religion. A few feel an opinion poll is the right way to determine the importance of a doctrine. Others feel very often the majority is composed of fools. Some say that the Punchayet is a religious body while others maintain that it is only an administrator of our funds and properties.
With so much disparity, how can anybody think of maintaining unity? Nariman has been bold enough to show a way out of this confusing situation. Of course to ostracize a few persons, as he has suggested, would be a harsh measure but unless this is done our future will remain in the doldrums.
