Births, marriages and deaths taken place during the first 15 days of the new year are carried in this issue.
Names of couples who tied the knot during this fortnight were unavailable from the Bombay High Court as the contact person was not reachable.
The start of 2012 saw the birth of only three babies (as per the records at the two hospitals that send birth details) as versus 32 deaths. The killers were: heart disease (eight, of whom six were 80+), pneumonia/lung disease (seven), cancer (four), diabetes (three) and multi organ failure, brain disease and old age/general debility (two each). Kidney failure, Alzheimer’s disease, haema-temesis (the vomiting of blood), thrombo-embolic (a clot carried to another part of the body in the blood stream to block another blood vessel), haemoptysis (the coughing up of blood) and liver disease took the lives of one Zoroastrian each. The community lost two centenarians (both ladies), one aged 101, the other, 105! Forty-seven was the youngest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for January 1-15, in Bombay, was 83 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
