Milestones

Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the last 15 days of 2011.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 31 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 32 years, averaging at 29 years.
Giving a boost to the community figures was the birth list. The two south Bombay hospitals (that send in birth data to Parsi­ana) recorded the birth of 11 babies during December 16-31! Nineteen Zoroastrians breathed their last during this period. Heart disease claimed five patients (three of whom were in the 80 and above age group). Multi organ failure and general debility/old age took the lives of three Zoroastrians each. Two fell prey to urinary tract infection and one each to pneumonia/lung disease, haema­toma (a swelling filled with blood), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) and septicemia. One case of death was cited as "violent asphyxia (suffocation) due to smothering associated with blunt trauma to the testes.” The community lost a 11-year-old boy who was an unfortunate victim of a road accident. The eldest to breathe his last was a 94-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of December in Bom­bay, was 74 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
