Milestones

Published in this Milestones col- umn are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in October 2010.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 20 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total num-ber of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The correspond-

ing figures for the grooms were 24 and 42 years, averaging at 31 years.

Eight Zoroastrian babies were born in October. Of the 78 bodies that were consigned to the Bom-bay’s Doongerwadi, 15 deaths were attributed to heart disease. Of them, 10 were 80 years and over. Pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of 13 lives whereas nine victims fell prey to cancer, seven to old age/general disease and six to septicemia. Multi or-

gan failure and hypertension claimed four Zoroastrians each. Two patients each succumbed to cellulitis (inflammation of con-nective tissue), diabetes and kid ney failure. Isolated cases regis- tered were: gastro-intestinal tract infection, asthma, emphysema (gaseous distention of the tis- sues), myelitis (inflammation of the spinal cord), Alzheimer’s dis- ease, malnutrition, liver disease, haemorrhage and shock due to multiple injuries, vivax malaria, brain disease, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, mal- nutrition and general ill health), peritonitis (inflammation of the delicate serous membrane which lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities), rectum surgery, hypo- volumic shock (diminished total quantity of blood) and arterio- sclerosis (degenerative arterial change associated with advanc- ing age). The age range fluctu- ated between 23 and 98 years. The mean age at death of Zoroas- trians for the month of October, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in sub- urban hospitals and private nurs- ing homes are not included un- less individuals send us informa- tion together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious cer- emony. The names of the de- ceased are supplied by the Bom- bay Parsi Punchayet. In the break- up of deaths according to ill- nesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combina- tion of several diseases.

If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
