Ratan Tata launches Swach water purifier
After the Nano car and Nano Housing, the Tatas launched in December a water purifier named Swach (which means clean or pure in Hindi) in two variants priced at Rs 749 and 999 each. "Safe drinking water is the most basic of human needs…We are happy that we would be able to provide millions more people an affordable access to safe water,” stated Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata in The Indian Express of December 8, 2009. With a target of a million pieces for the first year of launch, the Tata Swach needs no running water or electricity and is packaged as a 19-liter box. It was created in a TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) laboratory, the silver nanotechnology was added on by Tata Chemicals and Tatas’ watch unit Titan made the precision machine tools to manufacture the filter, as per press reports.
