Travelling tariffs
Parsiana compiles a list of 33 dharamshalas and sanatoria built by Zoroastrians all over India
Affordable accommodation when traveling for work or pleasure to different parts of India may be a pipe dream for most. But for members of the community, thanks to the foresight of our forefathers and mothers, 33 Parsi founded dharamshalas and sanatoria are functioning.
Of the 88 anjumans we approached for information on the subject (full name of dharam-shala, complete address, phone number, name of manager, name of trust running the facility, tariff for boarding and lodging with available amenities and photos if possible), we received responses from 44. We are presenting the data in the same format after citing the source in each case. Places like Udvada have three dharamshalas and Navsari has two. In certain areas like Bhuj, Dahod, Hubli, Igatpuri, Kanpur, Sholapur and Tavdi the dharam- shalas are non-functional. This may be due to lack of funds to maintain the structures, few Zoroastrians residing in the areas and limited Zoroastrians availing of the facilities. In a few cases the information was solicited over the phone. Designations of respondents may be missing in a few places. Managers of some of the rest houses have replied on behalf of certain anjumans.
In 1999 author Marazban Giara had compiled a list of dharamshalas titled Pilgrim’s Guide. Parsiana’s efforts to compile a fresh list was made possible thanks to the anjumans that responded.

Our Anjuman has no such facilities at all. Formerly we did. But now ours is a micro-miniature community, boasting of just a dozen persons. We have neither the facilities nor the capacity to run a dharamshala. We actually find it difficult to maintain our dar-e-meher, despite renting out the former Hormuz Baug premises, which, being over 80 year old, does not fetch us much rent. Besides Hubli is now of rather inconsequential importance for stopovers or meal-times, thanks to regular more convenient flights and through-trains.

I regret that there are very few Parsis in Kanpur and since Parsi visitors to Kanpur are somewhat rare, we are not able to maintain a Parsi Dharamshala in Kanpur. We do have a functioning agiary (the only one in Uttar Pradesh) and there are quite a few reasonably priced hotels in this area of M. G. Rd (or the Mall). We did maintain one room only for visitors, which was considered to be a "Dharamshala” and was even listed in directories, but as our elderly priest is unable to take care of it properly, or look after visitors, we have discontinued letting this out as a Dharamshala.

Of the 88 anjumans we approached for information on the subject (full name of dharam-shala, complete address, phone number, name of manager, name of trust running the facility, tariff for boarding and lodging with available amenities and photos if possible), we received responses from 44. We are presenting the data in the same format after citing the source in each case. Places like Udvada have three dharamshalas and Navsari has two. In certain areas like Bhuj, Dahod, Hubli, Igatpuri, Kanpur, Sholapur and Tavdi the dharam- shalas are non-functional. This may be due to lack of funds to maintain the structures, few Zoroastrians residing in the areas and limited Zoroastrians availing of the facilities. In a few cases the information was solicited over the phone. Designations of respondents may be missing in a few places. Managers of some of the rest houses have replied on behalf of certain anjumans.
In 1999 author Marazban Giara had compiled a list of dharamshalas titled Pilgrim’s Guide. Parsiana’s efforts to compile a fresh list was made possible thanks to the anjumans that responded.

Our Anjuman has no such facilities at all. Formerly we did. But now ours is a micro-miniature community, boasting of just a dozen persons. We have neither the facilities nor the capacity to run a dharamshala. We actually find it difficult to maintain our dar-e-meher, despite renting out the former Hormuz Baug premises, which, being over 80 year old, does not fetch us much rent. Besides Hubli is now of rather inconsequential importance for stopovers or meal-times, thanks to regular more convenient flights and through-trains.

We do have a functioning agiary (the only one in Uttar Pradesh) and there are quite a few reasonably priced hotels in this area of M. G. Rd (or the Mall).
