Funds for dog shelter

I write on behalf of a stray dog shelter in Madras called the Animal Welfare and Protection Trust (AWPT) which houses over 130 dogs and 25 pups and is currently in urgent need of funds. This non-governmental organization was started and is run by a lady named Padmavathi and her husband at a time when the local municipality began killing stray dogs by immersing them in acid baths. The founders are now over 70 years of age. The dogs are kept at their own house and in a rented apartment. They need money to buy land to build a permanent shelter for dogs. They fear that once they’re no more, the dogs will become homeless again, return to a life on the street and either starve to death or be brutally killed by the municipal authorities.

A couple of my friends and I are trying to help the AWPT raise funds to build a permanent shelter for these dogs. Being a Zoroastrian myself, I am aware that the community does a lot for animal welfare.

The AWPT is located at #3/140, Kalaignar Karunanidhi Street, Santhoshapuram, Velachery-Tambaram Main Road, Madras 600073; tel: 22781381, 9841638489, 9841248870; e-mail: awptrust@yahoo.com
