Jamshed, a jewel

August 1, 2002 marked the 50th death anniversary of Jamshed Nusserwanjee. Jamshed Nusserwanjee Rustomji Mehta was the real maker and the uncrowned king of Karachi. Regular, punctual, straightforward and honorable all through his life, he dominated the public life of Karachi. The great and noble son of Hind sacrificed his vast business in serving the country and its people. He was respected both by the government and the people.
A gentle leader who believed in humility, Jamshed was a saint who was loved. Blessed with a silently attractive personality, he disliked pomp and power, and refused honors.
Jamshed was a true jawahir (jewel) — a scholar without fads — a sage without ostentation without affiliations and pretensions. Jamshed was a messenger of peace, mercy and unity. His work amongst the poor, the distressed, the afflicted and the harijans will ever be remembered. He was a healer without a parallel. And he died in harness — as a true servant of God and of humanity.
