Delaying tactics?

Community activist Phiroze Amroliwalla (pictured) has filed an interim application before the Bombay High Court "seeking directions as to updation of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) voters list prior to holding fresh elections and seeking that the schedule for holding elections be fixed after the proposed amendments to the scheme of election is approved by this Court.”
As per the consent terms agreed to by all five trustees, the election is scheduled for March 27, 2022 for all seven trusteeship seats of the BPP.
The election has been thrice delayed by the supporters of the former BPP chairman Dinshaw Mehta. Mehta’s loyalists currently hold a three-to-two majority on the BPP board. It is alleged that in order to perpetuate that majority the Mehta camp is attempting to delay the elections.
The BPP electoral rolls over the years are replete with names of deceased voters, not to mention those who have changed residence. Unless a door-to-door census is undertaken, the list will continue to have inaccuracies. Undertaking such a mammoth task will take time and money. The same lists with some updation have been used in the past. While voting, registered voters have to show their BPP electoral certificate and/or some government issued photo identity card. The administrative staff and the candidates’ volunteers have to remain vigilant that no impersonation occurs.
Justice A. K. Menon had directed the matter to be heard on December 6, 2021.
