Milestones
While compiling the list of deaths [from Doongerwadi and the Worli Prayer Hall (WPH)] from Februrary to July 2020, some names were inadvertently left out due to various factors pertaining to the lockdown.
The missing deaths are being carried in this issue. Parsiana regrets the omission.
Parsiana sources information for the Milestones column from various anjumans, hospitals, individuals, newsletters and publications. While much of the material is sketchy, the Bombay marriages and death lists are quite exhaustive.
Data on marriages within the community in Bombay is culled four times in a year from the office of the Registrar of Marriages at the Bombay High Court and on interfaith unions from the Registrar of Marriages offices at Fort and Khar. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony.
The WPH sends Parsiana names of those cremated there.
The last few names of those deceased in August 2020 find mention here.
In the break-up of Bombay Doongerwadi deaths, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
Causes of deaths for March 2020: Thirteen Zoroastrians succumbed to heart disease of whom seven were over the 80-year milestone. While 12 fell prey to pneumonia/lung disease, eight were victims of cancer and six each of diabetes and old age/general debility. Other killers were: hypertension (four), brain disease and septicemia (a life-threatening condition caused by an infection) (three each) and Parkinson’s disease and urosepsis (two each). Urinary tract infection, burns, leukemia and anemia (a condition in which the blood doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells) claimed isolated lives. In the case of two deaths, the coroner’s report was kept pending. The community lost a 101-year old male — the highest age at death as well as a 40-year-old lady who was the youngest to die. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for March 2020 in Bombay was 82 years.
Causes of deaths for April 2020: Heart disease was a major killer (25). Nineteen of the 25 were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Diabetes and cancer claimed seven lives each, hypertension and old age/general debility, five each, multi organ failure, head injury, septicemia, Parkinson’s disease and lung disease/pneumonia, two each and urosepsis, brain disease, gastrointestinal bleed, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney failure and cellulitis (a common and potentially serious bacterial skin infection), one each. The eldest and youngest to die were both females, at 98 and 57 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for April 2020 in Bombay was 82 years.
Causes of deaths for May 2020: Eighteen of the 26 lives that were lost due to various diseases of the heart were 80 years and above. Eight Zoroastrians were victims of diabetes and six each fell prey to old age/general debility and septicemia. Five perished due to cancer, four due to lung disease/pneumonia and three each due to liver disease and hypertension. Anemia, urosepsis and Alzheimer’s disease felled two each and one patient each died due to Parkinson’s disease, multi organ failure, kidney failure, cachexia (weakness and wasting of the body due to severe chronic illness) and brain disease. A 50-year-old female was the youngest to breathe her last, the eldest, a 97-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for May 2020 in Bombay was 82 years.
Causes of deaths for June 2020: Heart disease (21, with 12 over 80 years); diabetes (13); pneumonia/lung disease (eight); cancer and hypertension (seven each); old age/general debility (three); septicemia (two) and cachexia, Alzheimer’s disease, multi organ failure, urinary tract infection, kidney failure and schizophrenia (one each). A 27-year-old male (who was the youngest to die) was lost to the community. A 97-year-old female was the eldest to perish. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for June 2020 in Bombay was 79 years.
Causes of deaths for July 2020: The major killer — various diseases of the heart — claimed 26 Zoroastrians. Thirteen had crossed the 80-year-old milestone. While eight deaths were attributed to hypertension, seven patients each succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease and cancer. Four patients each fell prey to diabetes and septicemia, three each to urinary tract infection and brain disease and two to liver disease. Old age/general debility, anemia, gastroenteritis and anorexia (an eating disorder causing people to obsess about weight and what they eat) felled isolated victims. Forty-seven was the youngest age at death, 97, the oldest. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for June 2020 in Bombay was 78 years.
Parsiana also receives death intimations from the Poona Parsi Panchayat, Parsi Zoroastrian Anjuman of Secunderabad and Hyderabad, The Surat Parsi Panchayat Funds and Properties Trust, Jhansi Parsi Anjuman, Nagpur Parsi Punchayet, Zoroastrian Society of Ontario, Fram Framji of Karachi, Dr Ardeshir Damania of California and Arnavaz Sethna of Houston.
Data on births in Bombay is made available by the Breach Candy Hospital. Births in other hospitals and private nursing homes are included when an individual sends us information together with a copy of the birth certificate.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, they are welcome to write to/email us. Some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be necessary. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement.
