By Farrokh Jijina · March 21, 2019

"The world’s biggest scanning of devotees for oral cancer” at the Kumbh Mela, which ended March 4, 2019, was organized by The Tata Memorial Centre (Hospital) in Bombay, the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Varanasi and the Kamala Nehru Hospital in Allahabad, noted a report in the mid-day (MD) dated January 11, 2019. The Mela, a mass pilgrimage in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred or holy river took place from January 15 onward at Allahabad.
Prof Pankaj Chaturvedi, head and neck cancer surgeon and deputy director of the Centre told MD that they were expecting a crowd of 30 million. Along with screening for oral cancer, the medical experts would also supervise a tobacco control program at the Mela, said the report. Screening activities are being supervised by the health department of the Uttar Pradesh state government.
