Cancer care in Kharghar

By Sherene Vakil · March 21, 2016
The Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer located in Kharghar, New Bombay — formerly the research wing of the Parel based Tata Memorial Centre of the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) — has started offering treatment to cancer patients, reported Daily News and Analysis (DNA) in its issue of January 24, 2016. Doctors from TMH offer their services at the new 111-bed Centre. Plans are afoot to double the capacity within two years, proving a boon for patients from nearby areas who had earlier to go all the way to Parel for treatment.

Dr Rajan Badwe, TMH director, told DNA: "All blood cancer related treatment will move to Kharghar within the next two years. Apart from that, a pediatric cancer department will also be set up in the campus. The outpatients’ department will be in Parel but major treatments will be offered in the New Bombay based campus only. It is a long process and will take some time.” Already, a digital mammography machine donated by a well-wisher has been helping improve the management of breast cancer patients, using "developing novel therapeutic modalities,” DNA notes.
