By Farrokh Jijina · January 21, 2018
In "an effort towards improving communication with students, parents and community,” the Bai Ruttonbai F. D. Panday Girls’ High School launched its website pandayschool.com on its 120th anniversary, informed principal Hutoxi Mistry in an email to Parsiana. The chief guest at the School’s 120th annual day on December 15, 2017 at Sheth Goculdas Tejpal Auditorium, chartered accountant Zubin Billimoria launched the "interactive (website), seeking constructive suggestions and feedback from the stakeholders.”

Billimoria, who was earlier welcomed by administrator Freny Mehta and felicitated by Mistry, gave away the prizes to the toppers for the academic year 2016-17. Advising students to be "socially responsible,” Billimoria asked them to "learn to give to those in need.” The roles of the parent and teacher are interchangeable, he said, cautioning "today’s techno-savvy generation to be judicious in the use of gadgets.”
The annual reports for the high school and pre-primary school, highlighting the major activities and meritorious achievements of the students at intra-school and inter-school competitions were highlighted by Mistry and headmistress Silloo Commissariat respectively.
"The tots of the pre-primary and the primary school presented ‘Happy days are here again,’ regaling the audience with popular old and new songs and dances,” states Mistry’s note. Dances by the students of the middle school in colourful costumes were followed by the primary school choir which entertained the audience "with foot tapping numbers.” A skit Ouch, adapted from a play by Marathi playwright Sai Paranjape about an eccentric queen seeking a blood sucking bed bug as a pet provided lighter moments, while a medley of dances on women’s empowerment and the common man’s anger at society’s evils that "got the audience on their feet” provided the finale.
A vote of thanks for the behind the scene workers who toiled for the annual day function was proposed the School head girl Avni Rane.
The School was established in 1898 by Sir Dinshaw Petit, first Baronet and Lady Sakarbai Petit, in memory of their daughter Ruttonbai Framji Dorabji Panday. "On November 7, 1885, on the day of the uthamna ceremony of Ruttonbai, he put aside a sum of Rs 22,100 to be used for the purpose of founding a school,” which opened with five students and two teachers, notes their website. The School started admitting girls from sister communities in 1975. The institution functions as a part of the Garib Zarthostiona Rehethan Fund (GZRF), which also runs two housing colonies — Marzban Colony in Gilder Lane and Lal Chimney at Bombay Central. Academician Dr Navaz Mody, chief operating officer of GZRF functions as the School advisor. With 442 girls on its rolls, the website notes that the School, which is affiliated to the Secondary School Certificate board, "secures cent percent results” every year. Of the 54 students who appeared for the March 2017 examination, nine students achieved over 90% and 29 achieved distinction.
